Humpback ethogram
Each year, humpback whales migrate to colder waters off the east coast of the US mid-Atlantic and Northeast to feed. Yet not all of the humpback behaviors we see are associated directly with feeding. It is possible that some behaviors may have different meanings at different times. While we cannot always know why a whale does a specific behavior, we can define and describe it. This ethogram catalogues 38 different behaviors of the Gulf of Maine humpback whale population. This should not be considered the limit to the behavior repertoire of humpbacks, but rather a picture into some of the most commonly seen behaviors for this population during the feeding season.
